As the temperature rises and the summer progresses, it is common to use air conditioners to combat the heat. Unfortunately, the air conditioning compressor noise annoys both the owners and the neighbors. You can soundproof or absorb the noise that these devices produce.
Using Sound Barriers to minimize the noise
Around our homes and neighborhood, there is always noise. A simple solution we can suggest is the Quilted Sound Blocker Blanket. In addition, you may reduce other outdoor stationary noise sources like the air conditioners, generators, or the pool pump enclosure.
An easy and fast way to quiet an A/C unit is by constructing a box or frame around the condenser/fan and using a soundproofing blanket to minimize the noise. Allow space for air to enter and flow to the condenser, as well as allow the compressor exhaust air to freely move away from the equipment. These solutions can cut your noise by more than 50% and can be a DIY projects as long as you have basic building experience. However, before you start any DIY project regarding any devices at home, we recommend you check with your appliance manufacturer to ensure it won’t void any part of your warranty.
The Quilted Sound Blocker Blankets are the perfect solution to unwanted noise, with an STC 21 to 29 rating range (blocks between 21 to 29 decibels). The blankets are sewn on all sides/ends, and mounting grommets for attachment are standard. That’s why they are easy to install and maintain as needed.
What about unusual Noises?
All electronic devices emit some noise level, and the air conditioners are not the exception, although they are getting quieter and quieter. However, if you notice any abnormality regarding the noise level it emits, there may be a problem. If this is your case, keep reading.
Your air conditioner may make a little more noise than usual. To find out if this is the case, check the decibels that your device should emit in the manual: if the noise is higher than it is supposed to be, you may have a problem with the equipment. Some of the most frequent causes are the following:
- Changes in temperature
Many appliances produce noise due to wear and tear, mainly caused by temperature changes between cold and hot air. This contrast can cause a noise increase due to the expansion of the material with which it is made.
- Broken or Cracked Condenser Fan Blades
It may happen that the small blades connected to the condenser fan motor have cracked or have broken. The blades can break due to wear or external factors, so it is crucial to inspect them to verify that this is not the reason for elevated noise in your condenser.
- Debris Touching Fan Blades
Another reason is we could find something hooked between the blades. For example, a small piece of trash or yard debris such as leaves or branches could be causing this abnormal noise as it impacts the fan blades.
- Dirty fan or Dirty Air Flow Fins
Dirtier than usual airflow fins or fan prevents proper airflow. Dirt can disrupt or block the flow of air through the airflow fins or coming off the fan blades, causing the motor to work harder and possibly create more noise than normal.
- Faulty Bearings
Older condenser motors can have bearings that begin to fail, which causes the unit to make more noise.
Now that you know why your air conditioner condenser makes more noise than normal, please take a good look at it to find out what measures to take.
